Digital Product Passport
A Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a standardized digital record — essentially a digital twin — that contains key product-related data throughout the entire lifecycle of a product.
This includes every stage, from raw material sourcing and manufacturing to use, repair, reuse, and recycling. Each step is documented and traceable.
The concept was introduced under the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and will become mandatory in stages:
2026 – Batteries
2027 – Textiles
2028 – Electronics
Other sectors, such as construction and furniture, will follow.
The DPP is quickly becoming a core compliance and transparency requirement for manufacturers and brands across Europe.
What is a Digital Product Passport (DPP)?
Beyond the QR Code
While the consumer-facing QR code and app are important elements of the DPP, they represent only the visible tip of a much larger system.
The real challenge lies in developing a comprehensive data architecture that can collect, standardize, and connect product information across the full value chain — from design and production to end-of-life.
This requires:
Interoperable and scalable data models aligned with EU and industry standards
Accurate, accessible, and verifiable information for all stakeholders
Secure data exchange and traceability to ensure transparency for manufacturers, consumers, recyclers, and regulators
The QR code serves as an entry point, but the true value of the DPP lies in building a resilient digital backbone that supports trustworthy data sharing and sustainable decision-making throughout the product lifecycle.
What the DPP Means for Brands
For brands, the DPP is not just a compliance measure — it’s a strategic opportunity to enhance competitiveness, transparency, and consumer trust.
1. Enhanced Transparency and Brand Trust
Consumers increasingly demand proof of sustainability. The DPP allows brands to share verified product data, building credibility and long-term trust.
2. Operational Efficiency and Data Integration
Centralizing and standardizing data streamlines operations, reduces administrative effort, and improves data consistency across suppliers and partners.
3. Sustainability and Compliance Leadership
Early compliance positions brands as leaders in sustainability, improving their ESG performance and access to green funding or partnerships.
4. Circular Economy Enablement
The DPP supports repair, reuse, and recycling — helping brands extend product lifecycles and create new circular business models.
5. Marketing and Consumer Engagement
The QR code becomes a storytelling tool — enabling brands to showcase certifications, sustainability stories, and verified data directly to consumers.
6. Innovation and New Revenue Streams
Access to accurate, real-time data unlocks new digital services, predictive insights, and product innovation opportunities.
Where to Start
1. Assess the Current Data Landscape
Identify what product data already exists and locate data gaps.
2. Define a DPP Strategy and Governance Model
Assign ownership within the organization and define how DPP data will be validated, managed, and shared.
3. Choose a Pilot Product Category
Start with a single product line to build a Proof of Concept (PoC) and test the DPP process end-to-end.
4. Establish Data Standards and Tools
Adopt GS1, ISO, and EU data standards and integrate DPP solutions with existing systems (ERP, PLM, etc.).
5. Engage the Value Chain
Collaborate with suppliers, recyclers, and retailers to enable efficient and verified data exchange.
6. Prepare for Consumer Communication
Design how product information will be presented — through QR codes, web portals, or mobile apps — turning compliance into brand value.
